Rugby Manitoba Senior Men Division One

July 26, 2009

Game Played at Maple Grove

Brandon Barbarians 22 Winnipeg Assassins 0

A beautiful way to end the Sleepover Weekend!  The Barbs completed their two day action with  a win over the Assassins 22-0.

Nathan Peto had two tries and Aaron Kaluzniak one. Wayne Davis made two conversions and a penalty goal.

This was the second win of the season for the Barbs over the Assassins. and improved the Barbs ‘09 record to five  wins and four losses, good enough for 3rd place in the Division 1 standings (see below the View from the Berm), two points ahead of the Saracens.

I think, I will remember this match for along time.

Playing two matches - 24 hours apart - certainly isn't the norm in the Division-1 competition.... However, due to a necessary schedule revision for one of our fixtures from May - this challenge was presented to our guys this weekend.

Months from now, when I think back to this particular match - I will always remember the tremendous amount of composure and control that our guys displayed - while playing through both mental and physical fatigue.... And, in many ways, this was a much better performance for our guys - then when we last faced the Assassins, two weeks ago.

Certainly, we were lacking a little bit of 'zip', when compared to our performance on Saturday afternoon... However, our maintained focus and maintained execution on both offence & defense was wonderful - considering the challenging circumstances..... And, in spite of the collective fatigue as the match progressed, our play through 80 minutes never looked uncomposed or fractured... Our guys always looked eager - and the work ethic was great.

I know that yesterday's win over the Saracens was a 'high point' for our guys... And, as tired as they were prior to today's match - I know that they did not want to finish this weekend with an unsatisfactory performance.... This thought was never directly stated by anyone - but you could certainly sense it, prior to the match.

By the way..... Today's match was originally scheduled for May 23rd., but was re-scheduled so that the Brandon Rugby Club could attend the Funeral of  beloved club member, Darcy Parrott... With this in mind, I think ol' Darcy would be quite happy to know that they guys displayed so much determination in today's match.
