Brandon Barbarians Rugby Football Club

Rugby Manitoba Senior Men Division One

July 18, 2009

Game Played at LMSWinnipeg

Winnipeg Highlanders 31 Brandon Barbarians 12

So there was this Div 1 Senior Men’s Rugby game at Little Mountain Sportsplex. The “mountain” was easier to find than the Barbs’ rugby game. Maybe it was the heat or the wind or the great view of the absolutely  flat prairie in all directions except East where trees bordered the edge of the rugby pitch.

Though the Barbs’ Aaron Kaluzniak (who continues to improve with every outing) scored the first try of the game, the Highlanders led 7-5 at the half. The Barbs had better control of the game in the first half, but this control evaporated in the second despite Nathan Peto’s try and Wayne Davis’ convert. The Highlanders scored four tries, converting two in the second half and as Brent notes below, they really played eager, determined, rugby for the full 80 minutes.

Saturday's result in Winnipeg, leaves 'both' teams with a record of three wins and four loses.

In the Standings, we now lead the Highlanders by 1 Bonus Point - and trail the Saracens by 2 Bonus Points.

I’m not one to ignore things which occur (or don't occur) on the pitch during the course of a match. However, we can't dwell too much on today's loss to Highlanders - or the fashion in which we lost.

Simply stated, it was 'not' a good day for us on the pitch .... We never, really, looked comfortable - we never, really, looked ready - and it showed as the match progressed.

This being said, the Highlanders are still worthy of full-credit for the victory... They played eager, determined, rugby for the full 80 minutes.

I think, the entire First-half was a 'missed opportunity for us today... Considering the advantage that we maintained in both territory and possession, we certainly needed to produce a few more scoring efforts - and we certainly should have.... However, losing possession at key moments - was something which hampered our efforts over the first 40 minutes, and for the entire match.

Today's match was a disappointment for us - considering the positive performances which we have produced over the past month.... However, we're now half-way through the schedule - and our collective priority is produce winning rugby over the second half of the season.

We've been playing good rugby - but today's match got away from us..... However, perhaps the 'reality check' will help.

Some berm...
